About Tintagel Castle - Kastel Dintagel
Tintagel is a marvellous family experience of mystery, myth and magic - a place where kings rule and a legend lived. Be inspired by 2,000 years of history in the glorious setting of one of England's most stunning coastlines. You can see Atlantic breakers crash against the cliffs, and glimpse Merlin's cave as you climb the path to Tintagel Island. Explore the ruins of the 13th-century settlement of the Earls of Cornwall.
Take the rugged trail across the island and experience the breathtaking views at the place where legend says Arthur was brought up by the beautiful Queen Igraine. The Cliffs of Tintagel lie at the heart of a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Rich in flora and fauna they provide breeding grounds for sea birds, lizards and butterflies.
Wild flowers and lichen grow among the rocks, created from layers of volcanic lava millions of years ago. Recent excavations made headlines worldwide with the discovery of the 'Artognou' stone, a 6th century inscribed slate. This led to speculation that Tintagel was a royal site for the early medieval rulers of Cornwall and has fuelled tantalising speculation about the castle's mythical Arthurian past. The 'Artognou' stone: Roman settlement, Dark Age stronghold, medieval fortress - Tintagel's history is fascinating and there are many secrets still to be revealed?.
Great family events programme including Castle of Legend, Archaeology Festival and the Legends of King Arthur.
New outdoor interpretation across the site including imaginative sculptures made of bronze and stone.
